The word ' picnic' dates back to 1794, 100 years after 'pique-nique' was first seen in French. It is said that the French started the modern fashion for picnics. After the revolution of 1789, they opened their royal parks to the public. A 600-mile-long picnic was organized in France on July 14, 2000, to celebrate the first Bastille Day of the new millennium. 

                     The only novel by Jane Austen that mentions a picnic is Emma.
