Story-

Krishna was born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. Devaki's brother Kansa was her brother used to love his sister very much. Unfortunately, at the time of her wedding, when Kansa was departing his sister and brother-in-law, a thunderous divine voice announced that His sister's eighth son would kill him, he immediately imprisoned them and killed their newborn babies. To save them, Lord Vishnu appeared in prison before Devaki and Vasudeva and told them that he would be born to them on the 8th day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada with Yogmaya in the form of a baby girl. He told

his father Vasudeva to carry him in a basket to Nand village crossing the holy river Yamuna. Saying, the Lord disappeared.

The same night, Krishna told, the dark clouds overcast the sky, the stormy wind blew and the guards fell into a deep sleep, the barred doors gently opened on their own, the chains were broken and the Yamuna River parted to allow Vasudeva to carry the newborn baby Krishna to safety in Gokul. These miracles signify divine intervention and the triumph of good over evil.

Kansa too fell asleep that night. When awoke, he came to know that Devaki had given birth to the 8th child. Raged he headed towards prison and snatched the baby girl from Devaki's lap. That baby girl was Yogmaya. When Kansa caught her feet and hurled her to the ground, She immediately flew off to Heavens freeing herself from the clutches of Kansa announcing that his killer had been born.

Thus with the birth of Lord Krishna, the darkness of negativity was dispelled, the chains of ego were broken, and the prison of caste, creed, and religion were opened. This is te essence of Janmashtami.
