207- Story of Savitri and Satyavan

The story "Savitri and Satyavan" occurs in the epic 'Mahabharata'.  The goddess in Hindu mythology was the daughter of the solar deity Savitr and the wife of the creator god Brahma. She got
married to Satyavan, the son of a blind king named Dyumatsena of the Shalva kingdom. Satyavan was destined to die one year from the day,  she tied the knot.
The time passed and Yama came, yanked Satyavan's life, and started going southwards with it. Savitri faced Lord Yama bravely. She followed him. After taking seven steps, she said, ' Lord, I have walked with you, so we have become friends now.
Yama smiled and granted her a boon, "Ask me for a boon other than the life of Satyavan. Savitri used her boon and asked for her father-in-law to regain his eyesight and health. She,  however, did not
stop following Yama. Yama gently told her, "You will get tired, go back. Do  not  take  more  trouble." Savitri  said, " Sir,  you  are  my  righteous  companion  and  the company of Satsang  is  always  valuable."  Yama was impressed and granted her another boon.
This time she asked that her father-in-law regain his lost kingdom. " Granted," Yama said, with pleasure.
Savitri had still not stopped. Yama again asked
her to go back. Savitri said, " We are friends now. Won't you give  me anything?" Yama said, " Sure, why not. Ask your  wish, that  I can  fulfill." Savitri  said, "Please grant  my  father a hundred sons." Now Savitri addressed Yama as the one who is equal to all in
his disposition. She described him as one with a good heart
who inspires confidence in people. Yama was appreciative.
He granted her another boon with the same caveat.  She asked for a  hundred sons. Yama granted that. Savitri went on to extol
the righteous ones. Yama granted her yet another boon but
Savitri said, "The fourth boon cannot fructify without my husband  Satyavan. Yama returned her Satyavan.
Thus a fearless conviction conquered death.
