197 Ganapati Festival

The Ganapati festival often comes in the month of September. This festival continues for 10 days. People bring colorful idols of Ganapati to their homes with great pomp and show. They and the clay y offer their services to their dear Lord with full respect. They cook what Ganapati likes, they eat what Ganapati loves to eat, and they wear what is finest to please their God. Houses are decorated like a bride and earthen lamps are lit as a symbol of the spreading of the divine light. Ganapati remains in the houses for 1, 5, 5, 7, and 11 days, symbolic of our life span. Finally, Ganapati is immersed in the sea, or the river, and the clay merges back with its elements, Universal Consciousness. thus Ganapati's story is our story.

Ganapati is a divine incarnation where the formless infinite has assumed a form and has come to bless mankind.  Ganapati is made out of clay. Clay is the earth element in our bodies. When the pran-pratishtha ceremony is done, prana is infused in the idol, just like we are filled with panic, and bio-energy, which makes us feel alive and active.
Thus on the occasion of his birthday, installing his murti made of clay and to immerse in a river, pond or ocean signifies the subsequent cycle of birth and death. It highlights the formless reality manifesting through a form that perishes at the end but the formless always [atma] prevails.

"Ganesh is the Epitome of Wisdom"
Ganesh is the elephant-headed god of Hindu mythology. He is the eldest son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. His large head symbolizes wisdom.
Once he and his brother Kartikay were given a challenge to go around the world the one who finished first would be rewarded the fruit of wisdom. Ganesh at once circumbulated his parents thrice as they are the cause of this universe and received the award.
This story not only shows his wisdom but it also teaches us the value of respecting our parents and elders. Celebration of his birthday is celebrating the wealth of prosperity and peace.
                          Happy Ganesh Chaturthi.
