193. The story behind "Nag Panchami" {english}

Once, when a sage Shameek, was meditating, a king named 'Prikshit'  approached him to ask for water. Being in deep meditation the sage did not hear the king. The king became angry and rested a dead snake around the sage's shoulders. When the sage's son returned and saw this, he was enraged. He cursed unknowing who did it. He said,"  Whosoever did this will die in seven days from the bite of Takshak, the king of serpents."
After this curse bore fruit and King 'Prikshit' died, his son Janmjay decided to take revenge by conducting a sacrifice wherein all snakes of the world were to be offered into the fire. But during the sacrifice, another sage told the king's son that what he was doing was wrong. The sage imparted spiritual wisdom to him. Having to have received the gyan, the king's son asked the sage what he wanted in return. The sage asked him to stop the sacrifice and promise me that in the future you would never destroy any living creature out of hatred or in the name of revenge.
               'Prikshit's son surrendered before him and stopped the sacrifice. Thus this day came to be celebrated as "Nag Panchami."
The day teaches us that all creatures-included snakes are part of one Supreme Cosmic Power and so the world is one big family. From this perspective, man does not have the right to infringe upon the life of other creatures. They have the same right to life on earth as we humans do.
But every mishappening is a blessing in disguise.
king Parikshit would not have attained liberation, if not for his anger directed at Sage Shamika. After committing a blunder, he sought Sage Shuka's help, and the text Srimad Bhagavatam was recited to help him reach his ultimate goal. But our mistakes need careful handling. Right, channeling the energy can raise one to great heights. Handled carefully, it is a door to justice and achievement.
