 Q.1- Who  is  this famous  personality ? 

 Ans-M. Visvesvaraya , one  of the  greatest civil  engineers our  country  has  produced .


Q.2-Where  was  he  born ?

Ans-He  was born on  September 15, 1861 near chikkaballapur, in  what  is  today South Karnataka. 


Q.3-What  was his  expertise ? 

Ans-His  expertise  was in the fields of irrigation and flood disaster management.

 He designed the ‘automatic barrier water floodgates’ which was installed in Pune in 1903 at the Khadakvasla reservoir.

These gates raised the storage level in the reservoir to the highest level likely to be attained without causing damage to the dam.

Ans-Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam, across the river Cauvery, in Mandya/Mysore, Karnataka.

Ans-This dam not only solved the drought problem in the then Mysuru state but also provided electricity to nearby areas.

Ans-The river Musi, a tributary of river Krishna, used to flood Hyderabad.In 1908, one such flood caused unprecedented devastation.

                     Visvesvaraya suggested to create resvoirs above the city level to store water that exceeded the river's carrying capacity.

               This resulted in the creation of Osman Sagar [Gandipet] and Himayat Sagar reservoirs,along with a modern system of underground drainage.


  In 1906–1907, the Government of India sent him to Aden to study water supply and drainage systems. The project prepared by him was implemented in Aden successfully. He was instrumental in developing a system to protect Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion.[11] This dam created the biggest reservoir in Asia when it was built.[12] Visvesvaraya gave his technical advice for the location of Mokama Bridge over Ganga in Bihar. At the time, he was over 90 years old,[13][14] and was called the "Father of Modern Mysore State".
