194. Story behind " Raksha Bandhan"

Raksha Bandhan, which literally means 'bond of protection', is celebrated on full moon day, in the month of Shravan. That's why it is called "shravni" which means in Hindi " श्रवण करना " । It is believed that Lord  Shiva when imparted  'Brahm Gyan' to Goddess Parvati, lost control over her senses and slept in between but a couple of 'Shuk and Shuki' listened it with rapt attention. Since then the Rakhi ritual of tying Mauli on the wrist became the symbol of performing only pure actions through the sense organs and Tilak became the symbolic of 'conquering over senses'.

Very few people know that this festival is directly linked to Lord Shiva. It is a bond of purity and a symbol of divine protection. According to Hindu mythology, during the churning process of the ocean, Vasuki, a naga on Shiva's neck became a long rope after being promised that it would get its share. when venomous fumes were emitted by Vasuki, all gods and demons were terrified because it was so powerful that it could destroy all of creation. Then Lord Shiva consumed the poison and protected all three worlds. That's why, in scriptures, Raksha Bandhan  is known as 'Vish Todak Parv', [विष तोड़क व पुण्यदाई पर्व ] the festival of destroying vices.

Human souls always need protection in the need of the hour and so to seek His divine blessings, during the Hindu month of Shravan, devotees travel long distances and visit temples to pour water on the Shivlingam on Mondays. The ceremony is called 'Punya Pradayak Parv', the occasion to earn virtues. In Ujjain Mahakaleshwar temple, even today, rakhi / a piece of thread is tied around Shivlingam.

                                   [ story 2 ]

Once, there was a 12-year-long war between the gods and demons. Ultimately, the demons emerged victorious and snatched away heaven from deities.

Nevertheless, [despite that ] Indra, the king of the Devas, vowed to reaffirm his sovereignty over heaven by waging one more war with the demons. Before going to war, Indra's spouse, Indrani, tied a raksha sutra around his wrist as a symbol of purity and protection. Indra won the war and the gods rejoiced as they reclaimed their sovereignty over heaven. Thus Raksha Bandhan is not a festival of brothers and sisters only. Its real meaning is " Wish for protection."

                                         [ 3 ]

As time passed, people started calling it the festival of bondage of brothers and sisters. According to another legend, when Yamuna, the sister of Yama, the god of death, tied a rakhi around his wrist, Yama declared that whosoever overcame lust and tied this bond of purity by a sister, would be free from fear of death and eventually would attain immortality. In this way, it has another meaning, " Wish for a long life."
