191 Guru Purnima

     सब धरती कागद करूँ , लेखनी सब बनराय ।

     सात समुंदर की मसि करूँ, गुरुगुण लिखा न जाय ॥

                                                       Sant Kabir.

Means -if the whole Earth is transformed into paper with all the big trees of the forest made into pens; if the entire water in the seven oceans is transformed into writing ink; if for eternity I was to write the glory of the guru, it would not be enough. Such is the greatness of the guru.

According to the Hindu calendar, this special day is observed on Purnima, full moon day, in the month of Ashadh, June-July. It is then known as "Guru Purnima".  In the word "Guru Purnima" the first syllable 'gu' represents Maya, the power that deludes, which poses a big impediment to the seeker's effort to attain God-realisation. The second syllable "ru" represents the Supreme Light of Consciousness. The word 'guru' thus indicates the rise of the sun in the form of the knowledge of the self. When the grace of a sadguru descends upon the disciple, the dark clouds of Maya disappear and the light of Pure Consciousness shines forth in all its glory.

The special day of Guru Purnima, also known as Vyas Purnima is a day to express our gratitude, devotion, appreciation,

and recognition for all that we have gained from various teachers. Vyas is one who edits, and compiles. Vyas also means diameter. Just as a circle does not have a beginning or an end, knowledge of Truth does not have a beginning or an end. One who can measure the breadth of that knowledge, one who can connect every point in that circle is called Vyas. Another meaning of Vyas is 'who doesn't sit or take rest but works with extraordinary dynamism. Therefore Vyas Purnima is considered to be Teacher's Day. On this day we remember our entire Guru parampara that starts from the Divine Himself, from Ishwara Himself as it is said that Ved Vyas is an avatar of Narayana and Adi Shankaracharya is the incarnation of Shankar. Ved Vyas compiled the Vedas and Adi Shankaracharya wrote the commentary on Upanishads; Ved Vyas composed the Mahabharata in which we find the jewel of the Bhagwad Gita, Adi Shankara wrote a commentary on it; Ved Vyas connected all the points in the Brahma Sutra, Adi Shankaracharya wrote the Bhashya, the commentary, on it, to make it clear.

At the same time, Adi Shankara spread the knowledge of the Veda with missionary Zeal so that we could return to our Vedic culture with complete clarity. This is the love of the great gurus.
