106 Gandhiji's Entry in Indian politics

Gandhiji was born on 2nd October 1869   in  Porbandar, Gujrat. He studied Law at Inner Temple, London. After that, he returned to India. He wanted to establish his practice in Mumbai, but due to a lack of knowledge of Indian law, he failed to do so. In 1893, a Muslim merchant in Kathiawar named Dada Abdullah contacted him. He owned a shipping business in South Africa. His distant cousin in Johannesburg needed a lawyer. Gandhiji agreed and set sail for South Africa. But like other people, Gandhiji also faced discrimination because of his skin, colour and heritage. He was not allowed to sit in stagecoach, elsewhere he was kicked into a gutter for daring to walk near a house. He was thrown off a train near Pietermaritzburg after refusing to leave the first-class coach. Gandhiji united the Indian community and fought for their civil rights. At a mass protest held in Johannesburg, Gandhiji adopted his methodology of Satyagraha. Ultimately South Africans gained the right to vote and Gandhiji was proclaimed the National Hero.
At the request of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Gandhiji returned to India in 1915. Here in Bihar's East Champaran district, a factory managed by British officer AC Ammon was extracting the Neel {indigo} which farmers of the region were forced to cultivate on 15% of their land. In 1917 Raj Kumar Shukla, a local farmer drew Gandhiji's attention towards this exploitive system. Gandhiji collected testimonies and statements from the farmers. An official Champaran inquiry committee was set up of which Gandhiji himself was made a member. The committee submitted its
report with recommendations that favored the peasants. Finally, indigo cultivation ended with the passage of a law in March 1918. Thus Champaran became Gandhiji's first 'Karmabhoomi' in India after his return from South Africa.
To keep Gandhiji's spirit alive, Tarkeshwar Prasad, the grandson of Raj Kumar Shukla organizes a "puja" on October 2 every year. He says that Gandhi ji was God for Champaran- farmers.
