After loosing the kingdom and honour in a game of dice,the five Pandva brothers were exiled by their cousins,the Kaurvas,to12 years of living in the forest and one year of living in cognito.After hidingtheir divine weapons in a hole of Shami tree, they decided to live in the kingdom of Virat.The Pandvas spent the last one year in disguise,but as the kingdom faced an attack from the Kaurava army,the brothers returned to the Shami tree,and for the first time in a year,drew their weapons on the day of Dussehra.That"s why it is a custom to hug each other under the Shami tree on this day and exchanging its leaves.
